High Potential and Gifted Education
Seven Hills Public School is committed to identifying and providing the best opportunities for High Potential and Gifted Education students. Idetification begins at enrolment with parents providing feedback on their child's talents and skills before Kindergarten. Children are given opportunities and access to specialist programs that will help them to develop their gifts or talents.
The focus of this program is not simply academic, it includes the visual & creative arts, drama, public speaking, PDHPE and the key KLAs
Some of our extra- curricula activities include:
- Participation in public speaking, debating and spelling competitions.
- Students are encouraged to apply for Opportunity Class and Selective High School placement
- Specialist sporting clinics in AFL, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming.
- Leadership development programs
- Creative Arts days through the Blacktown Learning Community. Children have access to the Blacktown Music Festival.
- Identified students are also nominated for specialist activities in their field of ability as they arise in the Sydney West region.
- Parents can access some financial support for this in special cases..
Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical.
Student leadership
Seven Hills Public School actively encourages and develops student leadership through our Student Leadership Team and our Sports House Leadership Team.
In Term 4 of each year, Year 5 students are able to nominate themselves as candidate for school captain or vice captain for the following year. The elections take place in the form of a ballot and all students are able to vote. Candidates must prepare a speech on their commitment to the role of school leader and present it at a school assembly prior to elections.
School captains and vice captains are announced at the end of year school presentation assembly where the incoming leaders are presented with their badges.
At the conclusion of our student leadership process, Year 5 students may nominate to become House Captain of their sporting house, Bluegum, Waratah or Wattle. Voting is a little bit more informal, however, students do go through a rigorous process in order to be elected.
Students don't have to be school captains or house captains to be considered leaders. We encourage our students to be leaders in the classroom and playground, through their support for other students, or their involvement in academic, sporting, cultural or community events and projects.
