Learning extension

Gifted and talented program

Seven Hills Public School is committed to identifying and providing the best opportunities for Gifted and Talented students. Idetification begins at enrolment with parents providing feedback on their child's talents and skills before Kindergarten. Children are given opportunities and access to specialist programs that will help them to develop their gifts or talents.

The focus of this program is not simply academic, it includes the visual & creative arts, drama, public speaking, PDHPE and  the key KLAs

Some of our extra- curricula activities include:

  • Excursions to Macquarie University to visit the Centre for Learning Innovation. here the children participate in course in Robotics, Computer studies, Graphic Design Programs and Film Making
  • Participation in public speaking, debating and spelling competitions.
  • UNSW ICAS competitions are offered to all students from Years 3-6.
  • Students are encouraged to apply for Opportunity Class and Selective High School placement
  • Specialist sporting clinics in AFL, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming.
  • Leadership development programs
  • Creative Arts days through the "Kids Connect" and the Blacktown Learning Community. Children have access to  the Blacktown Music Festival.
  • Identified students are also nominated for specialist activities in their field of ability as they arise in the Sydney Metropolitan area.
  • Parents can access some financial support for this in special cases..
  • Music lessons in guitar and keyboard can be arranged with specialist teachers, but parents need to be aware that such extra-curricular activities come at a cost to the parents.

Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical.

Student leadership

Seven Hills Public School actively encourages and develops student leadership through our school captains and prefects and the Student Representative Council.

In Term4 of each year, Year 5 students are able to nominate themselves as candidate for prefect or school captain for the following year. The elections take place in the form of a ballot and all students are able to vote. Candidates must prepare a speech on their commitment to the role of school leader and present it at a school assembly prior to elections.

School captains and prefects are announced at the end of year school presentation assembly where the incoming leaders are presented with their badges.

All students from Year 2 to 6 (excluding captains and prefects) are encouraged to nominate as a member of the SRC. Each grade chooses two representatives. These students work with the students leadership coordinator as part of the SRC. The SRC are a valuable member of the school community and are responsible for organising many fundraising activities that have made an important contribution to our school.

Students don't have to be school captains or house captains to be considered leaders. We encourage our students to be leaders in the classroom and playground, through their support for other students, or their involvement in academic, sporting, cultural or community events and projects.
