Cross curriculum content enriches and supports the learning areas and adds depth to student learning. In NSW students study a range of learning across the curriculum content.
Gifted and talented programs
Seven Hills Public School operates a Gifted and Talented Program that begins in Kindergarten. During their Kindergarten year, the children are identified and placed on a program that identifies their talents and provides them with opportunities to develop their skills and interests. These programs include all areas of the curriculum including Extension programs in English, Maths, Technology and Environmental Studies.
Literacy Groups
From Year 2 , the children are targeted for extension. The school operates four Literacy groups that target the specific learning needs of the children in those groups. The groups are multi-age and multi-stage. Children work at a pace that suits their needs and allows for extension or consolidation of their literacy program.
The direct outcome of these initiatives has been an 80% improvement in writing across stage 2 to stage 3 students and an 75% improvement in overall literacy scores in recent NAPLAN assessments.
Reading to learn
Seven Hills Public School has been a part of the National Partnerships program. As part of this Federal initiative Seven Hills staff have been trained in the Reading To Learn Program. This has been an exciting experience for the staff who have been challenged to introduce new methodologies in their classrooms to specifically target those children with learning difficulties. More information on Reading To learn can be found on the National Partnerships web site. National Partnerships
